Seeing the Nations Through the Heart of God

God’s heart has always extended beyond one people or one nation. From the beginning He desired to bring salvation to the whole world. His plan was not limited by national borders or cultural differences. Through Jesus Christ God opened the way for people everywhere to receive forgiveness and eternal life.

International mission begins with understanding this heart of God. It is not about traveling to another country or expanding the influence of an organization. It is about seeing people as God sees them. Every nation contains souls who were created in His image and who need to hear the good news of Jesus Christ.

When we receive the Gospel it is natural to desire that others would receive it as well. The grace of salvation was never meant to remain only with us. It should move outward through our prayers and service so that those who have not heard may also come to know Christ.

Jesus gave this responsibility to His disciples when He said: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). They were not called to keep the Gospel within the place where they first received it. They were commanded to go and teach others to follow Christ. This calling continues through the Church today.

Many people around the world have still not clearly heard the Gospel. Others may live in places where churches exist yet they have never personally encountered the truth and grace of Jesus Christ. International mission seeks to reach these people through evangelism and Bible teaching. It also seeks to raise faithful leaders who can care for believers within their own nations.

A stronger heart for the nations begins through prayer. We may not be able to travel to every country. However we can learn about the spiritual needs of people around the world and remember them before God. Prayer helps us move beyond concern for only our immediate surroundings. It allows the burdens of God’s Kingdom to enter our hearts.

International mission also reminds believers that the Church is larger than one local congregation or country. Followers of Christ come from many different cultures and backgrounds. Although their languages and customs may be different they share one faith and belong to one body through Christ.

Revelation 7:9 gives a beautiful picture of a great multitude from every nation standing before the throne of God. This is the hope toward which mission is moving. People from throughout the world will worship together because they have been redeemed through Jesus Christ.

When we understand this vision our differences no longer have to separate us. Instead they can reveal the greatness of God who gathers many people into one family through Christ. International mission allows believers to participate in this greater purpose and support what God is doing around the world.

Not every believer will serve in the same way. Some may be called to go to another nation. Others may pray or give financial support. Some may welcome international students and families living within their own communities. Each believer can ask God to reveal how they should take part in His mission.

The Church must not become satisfied with caring only for what is nearby. God desires believers to lift their eyes and see the wider harvest. As we pray for the nations our hearts can become more like His. We can begin to see people from distant places not as strangers but as souls whom God loves and desires to save.

May God give His Church a deeper love for the nations. May He raise faithful workers who will carry the Gospel across every boundary. May believers throughout the world work together until more people come to know Jesus Christ and worship Him as Lord.
