Have you ever struggled to get out of bed due to the lack of motivation in spending another 6 hours at a job that was unfulfilling? I know the feeling, friend, and so do many others who work in the secular world. It does not matter the job title or how much money we are offered. At the end of the day, we always want more. Little do we realize our satisfaction does not come from more material things, but rather more of God.

Our joy can never be complete if we base our value on worldly things.

John 15: 11 states, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete”.

As God’s creation, we find true joy when we surrender all that we are to be united with Him. When we unite ourselves with God, then our work becomes meaningful and exciting. Alex Liu, a writer for Harvard Business Review, wrote, “Our survey findings further suggest that joy stems from believing one’s work is truly meaningful.” The difference between working a worldly job and working on a mission for God’s kingdom is that as Christians, we do not work for fleeting pursuits, but we work for something that will last for eternity.

Liu elaborates in her article, “In any team environment, joy arises from a combination of harmony, impact, and acknowledgment – all of which business leaders can engender in their organizations.”

Harmony. Every person is unique in their own way which means that they do not have the same talents and skills. Giving your team specific tasks tailored to the development of their skills and talents will empower them to produce their best work and help the whole accomplish the goal.

Impact. Everyone in God’s kingdom was created for a specific reason and destiny that only that person can fulfill. As Christians, each of us makes an impact in restoring the Kingdom of God when we become awakened and strengthened through the gospel.

Acknowledgment. Sometimes we can become weary in doing our work, but acknowledging one another’s effort and cheering each other to move forward is what keeps joy in the atmosphere.

As Christians, we should be most joyful about our work, because we serve out of the love we recieve from God. Being a part of God’s Great Commission is more than enough when we realize we were not meant to be here in the first place. Because of God’s grace, we have a reason to rise and shine with gratitude and thankfulness.
