Last week, the AM HQ editorial team compiled a list of Top 5 Bible verses that contain the beautiful words  “But God.” Even when a situation is difficult, we can always remember God is great and living, so we should not fear but Always remember “But God” is on my side.

The list was broken down into a two-part top 5. Here is part 2.

(5) 1 Corinthians 3:6 

I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.

This is good to know so we don’t run off into Pharisee thinking when we succeed. God is the one who makes the works of our hands grow. Without God, nothing is possible.

(4) Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

(3) 1 Corinthians 1:27

But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty;

And what joy it is to know this, because as Paul said elsewhere, God’s power is made perfect in weakness. Amen.

(2) Genesis 50:20

But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.

One of this author’s favorite verses. When we really attempt to wrap our minds around it, it can be hard to process, but we, we should know that evil is never his intention, but God, he has the power to use those things in ways that go beyond our human understanding. He brings glory out of even the most gruesome. This is what Joseph understood, and through the number 1 verse on this list, we all grow to understand it as well.

(1) John 3:14-16

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Now, I have to admit guilt here- I broke the rule. But hear me out and forgive me for not being legalistic. There is such a profound implicate utterance of “but God” that I couldn’t leave it out. V-14 speaks of the Children on Israel, suffering from snake bites that would be fatal. This was deserved.  They had sinned and got what was coming to them. But God, through Moses lifting up the bronze snake saved them.

Similarly, man, we deserve sin and death, But God, through his son, saved us. When we read it in context, we could easily just say 14-16, “just as the people in the wild deserved to die but God saved them, we deserve to die, but God saved us. We deserve to be damned but God, but God loved us, and never stopped loving us. We know this because of Jesus on the cross.
